BREED
RESCUE PROGRAM

INTRODUCTION

So you want to start a Breed rescue program! This is truly commendable, but as much as everyone would welcome your efforts, you must first be ready to answer the WHY? question. Entering into rescue without the commitment and dedication required will find you disheartened and ready to give up pretty quickly.

Rescue is a wonderful feeling, especially when a successful placement is made. But it is also very frustrating. You will be dealing with people who don't care, who neglect and/or abuse their pets, or simply just don't understand. There will be countless numbers of hours spent on the telephone, providing education to the public. You'll need to arm yourself with contracts, programs, procedures, and information to cope with most situations. And you'll need to act quickly, because sometimes, mere hours can make the difference between life and death. Are you ready for the challenge?

GETTING STARTED

Before you open your doors and your heart to rescue, it is paramount that you establish yourself on sound legal ground. Years ago, having a pet follow you home was fine. But today, the law must be followed and the simple act of rescuing can become the target of hostility. You MUST protect yourself. Fortunately, following some basic precautions and using your own common sense will make it possible to help animals in need, and avoid a lawsuit in the process.

THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF RESCUE

Before you begin, please read each of the following subjects, and familiarize yourself with the information. It will prove to be a valuable resource in the future, and a good starting point for getting your own program up and running.
