The Story of
"MICKEY"
CENTRAL OHIO
SAMOYED RESCUE

Mickey was a 4 year old Samoyed male, living in Weirton West Virginia. We were called by a shelter volunteer that a Samoyed was on death row, and had to be saved as quickly as possible, or else his (the dog's) life would be terminated. We obtained the necessary information, and called the shelter director, who agreed to release the animal to a local Vet for tests and an examination.

A Vet treated Mickey, and discovered he had heartworms. Still, she thought he was good enough to save. We drove to Weirton, and after paying an absolutely outrageous fee (nearly $200 for two radiographs and a few shots), we headed for home.

Mickey's owner had turned him in, saying he was moving and could not take the dog with him. Supposedly, Mickey's real name was "Bones". Although it fit (Mickey only weighed 41 pounds) he simply did not respond to it. I decided to call him Mickey, and he liked the name immediately. Now that he had a real name, I figured we should at least try to save him.....

Mickey was slowly gaining weight in our care, but it was a fight. There were days we really struggled, trying to justify the cost of heartworm treatment, knowing the dog was not heavy enough to withstand the strain. We considered putting him down, but in the end we would always agree to a few more days. Things just didn't look that good for Mickey.

Thankfully, along came Dave and Debbie Hill, of Powell Ohio. They visited us, and fell in love with Mickey's gentle manner. Dave offered to pay for Mickey's medical treatment if we waived the adoption fee. We told them how slim the chances would be, but the Hill's were positive they wanted to try. We agreed.

Today, Mickey is happy, healthy, and heartworm free. He shares the home with two other dogs, and all of them get along well. Things couldn't have turned out any better!

The photo on the left shows how Mickey looked when we got him. The picture on the right shows how Mickey looks today. Thanks Dave and Debbie for the update!
