June 28, 2003 (Day 70)

Today is also the end of Week 11. It will be a day we don't forget for a long time.

Sara went to the Vet today to start her heartworm treatments. It will be strange not having her around for the next 6 days, but due to the timing she needs to spend this weekend there (no way for us to get her to the office that early on Monday). Sara was not pleased at all to be taken inside the building.... the last time she was there, she was spayed.

Tyler received all of his shots and a good examination. But as feared, he turned up positive for heartworms. Taking a deep breath and deciding I'll find a way to pay for this later, we elected to go ahead and leave him at the vet too, for treatment. Might as well get it taken care of now before they get much worse.

And then came Gunny. This was NOT a pretty sight! Gunny needed a full muzzle during handling, and was completely unhappy with being there at all. Worse, he turned up positive for heartworms. Much worse than his brother. And his temperature was elevated, at 105.8 degrees. We discussed his case with the vet and elected to bring home again, to rethink his treatment.

Week 11 (Summary)

Sara and Tyler are at the vet, awaiting treatment for heartworms. Both are seen as good candidates for the procedure, and when they return (and after the resting period), the only treatment left for them will be to neuter Tyler. They are well on their way to being healthy dogs again.

But that brings us to Gunny. The vet really doesn't feel that Gunny is a good candidate for heartworm treatment because he would need to remain sedate for a good month, and Gunny is so full of fear that he would be likely to have problems due to elevated heart rate and pressure. We love this boy, and are not willing to give up on him. We have gone through what was left of our cash reserves, and we cannot afford to throw away money on a dog that doesn't meet the criteria. But at the same time, how can we say no to him? Really.... we can't. So we will move him up with the other dogs and work on limited exposure to one dog at a time, as well as us. We are going to treat him for worms AGAIN (still has them!) and put him on aspirin to help with the temperature. God willing, he'll improve enough to justify the hundreds of dollars for treatment that I cannot afford but won't deny him if he shows me even the slightest spark.
