INSURANCE
For Your
RESCUE PROGRAM

OBSERVE THE LAW

As obvious as it may sound, the best insurance you can have is to always follow the legal policies and your guidelines, without deviation. It's when you stray from the policies that bad things tend to happen. It's why I've advised against lateral placements, and I'll talk even more about it in the "Minimizing Risk" section. Make sure you stick with the plan. Now, you may still have someone that feels slighted, and sues for the heck of it. But if you have followed your guidelines and completed the documentation, it will be much harder for the person to win.

AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB

Once you have your program organized and ready, contact the AKC about insurance for rescuers. In the past, they have offered it through the American Horse Show Association, Denver, Colorado.

SPORTSMEN'S INSURANCE AGENCY

The last time we checked, the Sportsmen's Insurance Agency Plan, Inc. (Cape Vincent, NY), offered liability coverage to Breed rescue groups. You will be required to furnish them with a set of your adoption and placement guidelines, along with a statement that your group is nonprofit. Coverage is usually available for specialty or all-breed clubs, as well as independent rescue from an organized group.
