RESCUES

INTRODUCTION

Anyone can give a dog away. Anyone can place a healthy dog. But it takes a special person to patiently screen homes and make sure that each rescue has a quality environment, for life. That's what placing rescues is about.

ADVERTISING

You can put together a small ad saying "xxxx Breed Rescue now accepting applications for loving homes." Run it in your community newspaper, and don't forget there is an adoption fee.... mention it too. This is not the most effective means of communication, but it's a start.

I should mention here that you will probably get all kinds of crazy calls. Johnnie who wants to "get a pair of them to breed." Sally who wants one to "kill anyone who breaks into the home." You get the idea.... Screen the applications carefully.

VISIBILITY

A more valuable tool is visibility. Visit the local Pet centers, with one of the resues. Show off the dogs! Get seen! Take walks! Go to the parks! Visit the news rooms and TV stations! When you increase the public awareness, you increase your chances of finding good homes.

THE INTERNET

I have to admit, I was skeptical about this at first. But after several years, I can say the internet is a great source of homes. You do need to let people know you are out there, and the best way to accomplish that is by listing with several search engines. You can also contact places like the Pet Channel, Acmepet, and so forth. They are usually happy to review your internet site and call attention to you.

NETWORKING

Word of mouth is by far the best method. When people you have helped tell others about the wonderful dog they received through rescue, it increases your chances of placing even more dogs with their friends.

Also, when you meet people on the street, at the office, or even at shows, mention "oh, by the way...." Never miss a chance to spread the word. That perfect home may be just one sentence of "you should see the dog I am working with now" away.
