FOSTER HOME RESCUE ACCEPTANCE

Foster homes should have the right to accept or reject the individual rescue dogs that they agree to care for. After all, the foster home should know it's limitations and what it cannot handle. This form provides the foster home a way to screen the incoming animal, and verify the necessary documentation has been given to them as well.

HOW TO USE THE ACCEPTANCE CHECKLIST

Provide this form to the foster home upon initial approval. Then when a rescue case becomes available, the foster home can fill out the necessary information, and furnish you with a copy. This form also helps protect both the foster home and your rescue program for liability.

There are four absolute rules regarding the acceptance of a rescue. They are:
  1. NEVER try to force a foster home to accept a dog they are not comfortable with.
  2. ALWAYS furnish a copy of the canine evaluation and the medical history when placing a dog into foster care.
  3. ALWAYS know up-front who is paying for the care and vet bills (refer to the volunteer agreement).
  4. Make it VERY CLEAR that the foster home IS NOT authorized to accept rescues into the program that are not initially screen by you or a representative first!

Generally, if a dog is not suitable for foster care, it should be held for evaluation and handled by someone considered an expert with the breed. Remember, your function is to preserve the reputation of your breed, while maintaining quality of life. The foster home may base it's entire opinion on just one case, so make your evaluation carefully first.
