APPLICATION for ADOPTION

Any person wanting to adopt a Samoyed must first complete the adoption application. Since you will be representing the DOG, not the people during the adoption process, you will want to have as much information as possible to base your decision on. Incomplete applications should be questioned first, then discarded if the applicant simply feels the information isn't necessary.

The primary purpose of the application is to obtain the best match between dog and owner. For example, if the owner has a handicap and can't get out much to exercise a dog, you probably wouldn't want to place a playful, active puppy with them. Or if they had children, you wouldn't want a dominant dog in that environment.

HOW TO USE THE APPLICATION

You can fax or mail this form to any potential home. Make sure it is signed and completed before processing the information! Some of the areas to look at closely are:

  1. Has the applicant had dogs in the past, and if so, what happened to them all?
  2. Does the applicant rent, and if so, do they have permission from the landlord to own a dog?
  3. Why does the applicant want a Samoyed? Is the answer logical?
  4. Has the applicant taken into consideration the exercise required?
  5. How about housing? Will the dog be kept inside, or outdoors? and if kept inside, has the applicant made provisions for the dog to eliminate outdoors when necessary, without risking it walking off (i.e., fenced-in yard)?
  6. Who will be the MAJOR caretaker for the dog?
  7. What will happen to the dog when the applicant goes on vacation?
  8. Does the applicant have a Veterinarian available, and has the telephone number been furnished?
  9. And finally, will the applicant allow a representative to periodically visit their home?

Remember, never disqualify a home because of an answer. Call and speak with the applicant first, and then if you still feel unsure, pass up the home until such time when the applicant can put your concerns to rest. After all, you don't want to place a dog in a bad situation, and it's your responsibility to decide what is best.
