Cassie (Bear Cove's Artic Flash - Breeder Terri Creech) was so skinny she could barely stand. Worse yet, our own Vets confirmed she was pregnant, carrying 9 puppies. Her weight was critical, only tipping the scales at 29 pounds. Too starved to survive surgery, she had been eating rocks just to make her stomache feel full. We needed to put some weight on her fast.
After 2 weeks of intensive, high calorie feedings, she was as close to being ready for surgery as she was going to be. The Vets did a wonderful job, but still, she was in poor shape to start with. The next 48 hours were rough, as she refused to eat anything and was fading away. Then we changed tactics, and brought the cat in to see her. Cassie had lived around cats, and after it sniffed Cassie's food bowl and walked away, Cassie took it as a signal that she could eat. The rest is history.
On Easter Sunday, we placed a happy, healthy, 44 pound Cassie with John and Bonnie Eft of Charlotte, North Carolina. Cassie has fit in well, and will share the joy of the Samoyed smile with her new parents for the rest of her life.
The photo on the left shows how Cassie was when we got her. The photo on the right shows the amazing transformation a bit of quality food and tender care can make.
