When shopping for a new puppy, make certain you ask the Breeder or supplier the following important questions:
- Have the hips been certified (OFA) for both the sire and dam, and are they rated fair or higher? Don't take someone's word for it.... check for yourself.
- Have the eyes been certified clear (CERF) for both the sire and dam? Once again, don't take someone's word for it.... check for yourself; ask for proof.
- Is there a comprehensive health guarantee available, at no extra cost?
- Will this person be there for you if you have problems or need advice?
You should also consider these points when making your decision.
- Are there champions in the pedigree, two generations or less back? (If you want a show dog - not really important for a pet)
- Is the registration slip available *now*, or are you being told "we'll send it to you." Be careful if it's not, because on occasion, the dog you are buying might not be registerable.
- If from a Breeder, check other dogs in that line, and look for temperament trouble.
- Ask for references, and check to see if other buyers have experienced problems with PRA, hip trouble, arthritis, and so forth.
- How young are the puppies for sale? Most reputable Breeders hold them longer, to make sure they are socialized and partly trained.
