Buyer Beware
(Making an Educated Choice)
This section is being provided as an educational tool. It is based on my own experience with the companies/persons on the list, not on rumors or second-hand knowledge. The summaries are *MY PERSONAL OPINION* (protected by the first admendment). I would encourage you to check them out for yourself should you have the need, and compare my notes with what you find. Policies can change, and I'll cheerfully update any writeup in the event new information is presented for my review.
When shopping for a new puppy, make certain you ask the Breeder or supplier the following important questions:
  1. Have the hips been certified (OFA) for both the sire and dam, and are they rated fair or higher? Don't take someone's word for it.... check for yourself.
  2. Have the eyes been certified clear (CERF) for both the sire and dam? Once again, don't take someone's word for it.... check for yourself; ask for proof.
  3. Is there a comprehensive health guarantee available, at no extra cost?
  4. Will this person be there for you if you have problems or need advice?
You should also consider these points when making your decision.
  1. Are there champions in the pedigree, two generations or less back? (If you want a show dog - not really important for a pet)
  2. Is the registration slip available *now*, or are you being told "we'll send it to you." Be careful if it's not, because on occasion, the dog you are buying might not be registerable.
  3. If from a Breeder, check other dogs in that line, and look for temperament trouble.
  4. Ask for references, and check to see if other buyers have experienced problems with PRA, hip trouble, arthritis, and so forth.
  5. How young are the puppies for sale? Most reputable Breeders hold them longer, to make sure they are socialized and partly trained.
